In Somerset we are fortunate to witness this homecoming up close. Tucked into the roofline of our stone cottage are several nests, to which a handful of these delicate birds return with religious fervour: year-in, year-out.
Building a nest is incredibly labour intensive, so it’s common for pairs of Swallows to return to an old stomping ground … I suppose it makes more sense to patch up your old place than construct a new home from scratch!
