My most treasured moment of spring? Witnessing the return of Swallows to our skies.

If they’ve made it, I think, then we are well on our way.

In Somerset we are fortunate to witness this homecoming up close. Tucked into the roofline of our stone cottage are several nests, to which a handful of these delicate birds return with religious fervour: year-in, year-out.

Building a nest is incredibly labour intensive, so it’s common for pairs of Swallows to return to an old stomping ground … I suppose it makes more sense to patch up your old place than construct a new home from scratch!
